Surface properties

the ITAC Effect

Enhancing performance, capability, and purpose through key formulations

Itac recognise that one adhesive or coating does not do everything for everyone. We work hand-in-glove with our clients to understand the environments their products are expected to perform in. So, whether it is a fabric coating to give protective clothing increased abrasion resistance, or the use of coloured rubber gaskets on plant machinery, Itac can help to impart the desired effect.

Slip

Surface slip of a coating is how easily the coating will move against itself or against other fixed surfaces. The slip is a function of the polymers used in the coating along with the roughness of the surface finish which can be adjusted by the use of different additives. Slip is an important consideration in the manufacture of balloon fabric, hospital bedding slide sheets, and umbrellas for example.

Clarity & Colour

ITAC can offer a wide range of polymers for use in their coatings and adhesive from highly opaque to optically clear. In addition, compatible pigments and colourants can be used to impart a wide range of colours to the products to meet the exact needs of the clients.

Abrasion Resistance

The degree of abrasion resistance of a coating will be a function of the physical properties of the polymeric species used in that coating. Subtle changes in the nature of the polymers and additives used can adjust this resistance to abrasion. Abrasion resistance is normally a required feature in products such as conveyor systems, life rafts, canopies, and upholstery.

pH Response

The presence of acidity or alkalinity on a coating can be used to trigger a response in the coating such as a colour change. Litmus paper is an example where pH response is required.

Surface Energy

The surface energy of a coating can be modified by the inclusion of certain materials into the coating. This effect can be utilised to change the way the coated surface behaves to water or other polar liquids either increasing or decreasing the shedding of liquid from the surface. This effect can make the surface easier to print upon.
