Waterproofing

Waterproofing is the process by which an object is made to resist the ingress of water and is a common requirement in construction coatings and fabric coatings. In construction, waterproofing is required to maintain the building envelope. In addition to this, waterproofing is an integral part of controlling corrosion which requires both water and oxygen to progress. In fabric coating, waterproofing is measured by the head of water (in mm) which can be suspended above the fabric before water seeps through with typical fabric coatings achieving 2,000mm to 3,000mm before allowing water to pass through. This test is more commonly known as the Hydrostatic head test. Fabric coatings can also be used to reduce the rate of absorption of water into the fabric. Waterproofing is particularly important in products such as rainwear, tarpaulins, pond liners, landfill liners, marquees, and tents.

Air Tightness

Air Tightness is the ability of a fabric (or fabric coating) to allow the passage of air (or other gas). Generally fabrics are porous and will allow gases to pass through readily. Fabric coatings can be applied to reduce or control the gas transmission rate of any gaseous media such as water (moisture vapour), oxygen, nitrogen, air etc. Air tightness is a requirement for products relating to air balloons, life jackets, and nuclear, biological or chemical warfare suits.

Anti-Corrosion

Anti corrosion refers to the protection of metal surfaces from corrosion in certain environments. Corrosion is the oxidation of a refined metal into a more chemically stable form such as an oxide. Corrosion typically requires the presence of moisture and oxygen and is accelerated in the presence of certain chemical species such as some salts. Anti-corrosion coatings are normally coatings that stop one (or more) of the essential species from being present (usually water) although coatings can be formulated with sacrificial elements that are changed chemically in preference to corrosion taking place. Steel roofing sheets, pipework and external metal construction are typical facets of industry where anti-corrosion coatings are applied.
