Bonding performance

the ITAC Effect

Bonding and coating expertise for optimum performance in application and end use needs.

Itac understand the various factors that determine if a bond between two or more substrates will exceed requirements or fail. These include the substrate material, the product’s intended use, environmental factors, and the polymers and additives used in the adhesive coating’s formulation. We work closely with our clients to align our expertise and knowledge with their product and application needs.

Bond strength

Adhesion

Adhesion describes how the adhesive or coating will bond to a surface and depends not only upon the adhesive or coating that is being used but also upon the substrate(s) to which the adhesive or coating are applied. Adhesion can be modified in many ways. On porous surfaces, achieving a high degree on penetration of the adhesive into the substrate can be effective whilst on non-porous surfaces, the use of a primer or surface modifier may be required to increase adhesion.

Grab

Grab describes the tendency of a wet adhesive to hold in place during the drying/cure process. A high grab adhesive sticks firmly very quickly whereas a low grab adhesive does not, allowing the accurate repositioning of the adhesive bond before the optimal bond is achieved.

Tack

Tackiness describes the inherent stickiness of an adhesive or coated surface. In some situations, very low tack is required to ensure that the adhesive does not stick in locations where it should not. For example, a pressure sensitive car wrapping film is required to slide over the surface bodywork of the car to allow accurate positioning and, once in position, the pressure sensitive adhesive nature of the film is utilised to ensure it adheres firmly in the desired location.

Bond strength

The BOND STRENGTH of an adhesive or coating tends to be governed by the yield strength and fracture mechanics of the polymeric species being used and is measured in a number of ways: SHEAR STRENGTH is the strength of a bonded surface pulled apart in a direction that is parallel to the bonded surface. TENSILE STRENGTH is the strength of a bonded surface pulled apart in a direction that is perpendicular to the bonded surface. PEEL STRENGTH is a specific measure for when one or both to the substrates is flexible and measures the force required to propagate the failure of the bond along its length as the substrate(s) are pulled apart. Adhesive bonds can fail in a number of ways. COHESIVE FAILURE is where the body of adhesive between two substrates is the weak point of the bond. When a bond fails in this way it tends to leave a film of adhesive on both substrate surfaces. ADHESIVE FAILURE is where the interface between the adhesive and the substrate is the weak point of the bond. When a bond fails in this way it tends to leave the body of adhesive on one or her substrate surfaces. SUBSTRATE FAILURE is where the adhesive is stronger than the substrate to which it is bonded. In this failure mode, the substrate breaks apart leaving the adhesive bond intact.
