It’s summer but there is a new room at Itac where the temperature is a cool 5˚C.
We are always looking to improve our service and we recently found a way to do just that for a major manufacturer. The way we worked previously with the organisation was well established. Our customer purchased the synthetic rubber compound, which we required to create a coating, and then put it into cold storage until an order was placed with us. It was then forwarded to our factory in Manchester to be processed into a high quality coating solution. We realised if we took direct delivery of the rubber, not only would we simplify the supply chain and reduce transport costs, we would also have the raw material on hand to offer a prompt response should an additional product batch be required.
First, however, Itac had to address the issue of storage. The shelf life of this compound is considerably extended by cold storage. When stored at an ambient temperature it will remain fresh and usable for around 8 weeks. With a temperature set at 5˚C the life of the product is effectively doubled to 16 weeks. In order to change the system and drive down costs we needed to invest in a cold storage facility. We discussed the prospect with our customer, who welcomed the idea and at the same time extended its commitment to Itac as its manufacturer of choice. The cold room is now operational and the whole system has improved.
